Repair And Polish The Glass Railing Leading To Your Business

If the glass railing leading to the entryway of the accounting firm that you own has a couple chips in its surface and the railing has a dull, cloudy appearance, repairing the railing and providing the glass with a clear, shiny surface can be achieved by following the advice below. In the future, preserve the condition of the railing by occasionally wiping the glass off with a soft, soapy cloth and covering the glass if you will be moving heavy equipment into your business or during stormy weather condition:

Materials

  • glass cleaner
  • non-abrasive cloth or sponge
  • tube of waterproof epoxy
  • plastic syringe
  • putty knife
  • sanding block
  • fine grit sandpaper
  • tack cloth
  • polish
  • buffing sponge
  • fitted cover or weighted drop cloth

Clean And Repair The Railing

Use a non-abrasive cloth or sponge to wipe glass cleaner across the railing's surface. Dry the railing with a lint-free cloth. Use a plastic syringe to fill the chipped glass with clear, waterproof epoxy. Move the edge of a plastic putty knife or scraper across the epoxy-filled glass to remove excess epoxy. Wait for the epoxy to cure.

Once epoxy no longer feels tacky when you lightly touch it with one of your fingertips, secure a piece of fine grit sandpaper to a sanding block. If the hardened epoxy isn't smooth, lightly sand it with the sanding block. Use a tack cloth to wipe away dust particles that are on the railing.

Polish The Glass And Cover The Railing

Purchase a bottle of glass polish. Pour polish onto one side of a buffing sponge. Stand at one end of the glass railing and apply the polish-covered side of the sponge against the glass. Slowly move the sponge in a circular manner as you coat the glass with polish. Use moderate pressure while applying the polish so that any imperfections in the glass surface are eliminated.

Polish will lighten shallow scratches in the glass as you buff the railing's surface. Work your way down the length of the railing until the top, sides, and bottom of the glass are covered with polish. Remove polish from the railing by wiping a couple cloths across the glass surface.

Purchase a railing cover that is constructed of foam cushioning and secure the cover over the railing whenever the glass is prone to damage. Otherwise, drape weighted drop cloths over the glass surface to protect the glass during times that the glass railings are prone to damage.
